Grooming Product Care: How to Apply, Store and Maintain Your Essentials

How to read labels, use the right amount, keep applicators clean and store your grooming essentials so they stay pleasant and safe to use.

Spray Applicator

The products you buy only work well if you use and keep them properly. A few small habits help your grooming essentials stay clean, pleasant to use and safe. This guide covers the basics, whatever you use.

Read the product instructions before use

Every product is different, so the label is your best guide. Before you use something new, check:

  • How to use it: the amount, how often and where it can be applied.
  • Warnings: anything about eyes, broken or irritated skin, or who should not use it.
  • Ingredients: especially if you know that certain ingredients do not agree with you.
  • Storage and shelf life: whether it should be kept away from heat or light, and any "use within" guidance after opening.

If a label and a general guide like this one ever disagree, follow the label. If you are unsure, ask us or speak to a pharmacist.

Apply the appropriate amount

Using more than recommended rarely helps and can leave hair heavy or skin uncomfortable. Start with a small amount and build up only if you need to. If the label gives a quantity, use that. For a new product, try it on a small area first and wait to see how your skin responds before using it more widely.

For example, with a leave-in product such as beard oil, a few drops warmed between your palms is a sensible start. With a powder or spray product, apply lightly and build gradually, following its directions.

Keep product caps and applicators clean

Caps, nozzles, droppers and spray heads touch your hands, hair and air every day. To keep them clean:

  • Wipe the neck and cap of bottles after use so residue does not build up and clog nozzles.
  • Do not touch the dropper or nozzle to your skin or hair while dispensing.
  • Rinse reusable applicators such as spray bottles and brushes as the manufacturer recommends, and let them dry fully before refilling or storing.
  • Close caps firmly so product does not leak or dry out.

If you use a spray bottle or applicator, clean it regularly. You can browse grooming accessories when you need a replacement.

Store products according to their labels

Heat, direct sunlight and moisture can change how products look, smell and feel. In general:

  • Keep products in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, unless the label says otherwise.
  • Avoid leaving them in a hot car or next to a window.
  • Keep bathroom products tightly closed because steam and humidity can get into open containers.
  • Keep them out of reach of children.
  • Keep to the original container so that you always have the label, directions and batch details.

Check the label too for how long a product is meant to be used after opening.

Avoid sharing personal grooming tools where hygiene is important

Combs, brushes, razors, trimmers, dermarollers and applicators that touch skin or hair are personal items. Sharing them can pass dirt, oils and bacteria from one person to another. Keep your own, clean them regularly and replace them when they are worn or damaged. Where a tool is meant to be single-use or to be replaced after a set period, follow the manufacturer's guidance.

Recognise changes that may indicate a product should not be used

Stop using a product and do not apply it if you notice:

  • A change in smell that is strong or unpleasant compared with when you bought it.
  • A change in colour or texture, such as separation that does not mix back, clumps, or a gritty feel in something that should be smooth.
  • Mould, discolouration or contamination of the product or the container.
  • Skin discomfort such as redness, stinging or itching after use.
  • A product past its recommended use period or kept in conditions the label warns against.

If you develop a skin reaction, rinse the area with water, stop using the product and seek advice from a pharmacist or doctor if it does not settle. If you are unsure whether a product is still good to use, it is safest not to use it.

Frequently asked questions

How long can I keep a product after opening it?

Check the label. Many products show a period-after-opening symbol or a best-before date. If there is no guidance, look for changes in smell, colour or texture, and do not use anything that seems off.

Is it safe to share a comb or brush?

It is better not to. Combs and brushes carry oils and skin cells. Keep your own and wash them regularly.

Can I decant products into smaller bottles for travel?

Yes, as long as the container is clean, dry and closed tightly, and you keep the original label details somewhere you can find them. Do not mix different products in the same container.

My product separated. Is it still usable?

Some products naturally separate and mix again with a gentle shake. If it does not, or the smell or colour has changed, it is best not to use it.
